What are the best courses in IT?

A quick internet search on the subject will usually give you a bunch of recommendations. What did we do? Instead of blindly accepting the opinions of a random internet stranger, we took to Reddit and asked professionals themselves what they thought were the best courses in it. We found out that some people don’t really understand what Python is (it’s not just for web development!) and others are pretty divided over whether learning Java or C++ first is better but once you’ve learnt your first programming language, knowing how to code can open doors that you didn’t even know existed.

If you’re looking for jobs as a programmer, then Java developers were more important than any other class according to job site Indeed. What if I’m coding as a hobby? What if I just want to create my own app? What if I just want to learn how to code in general? What ever you’re looking for, here are the best courses.

Python

In second place with 14 votes was Python from Learn Python the Hard Way by Zed Shaw (it’s free). The course focuses on teaching through example and it is aimed at complete beginners so even though there are some good tips for more experienced coders, this isn’t really a course that you will get much use out of once you’ve nailed Python. It does have over 1 million views on YouTube which means it must be doing something right! Apparently it doesn’t go very deep into advanced topics like multi-threaded programming with Python and you won’t learn to design custom classes. What if I’ve already learnt another language? What should I do next? What’s the best language for me to learn next? Will Perl/PHP help me get programming jobs?

Java

For Java, was a course that got mentioned over and over again. It doesn’t go into too much depth when it comes to the basics but if you’ve never coded before, this is a great starter-course with confidence building exercises throughout.

Steve Scott of Udemy runs it and he’s had over 600,000 students take it which probably accounts for why it got 12 votes. Was a course that got mentioned over and over again. C++

First place with 20 votes was C++ from the University of Toronto. It boasts over 13,000 students and the best thing? It’s free. What kind of software can I create with it? What sort of jobs will having C++ skills get me? What is a garbage collector and does my program need one? What if there wasn’t one what would happen then? What do they mean when they say that C++ is faster than Java?
